Functional Appliances

Orthopedic appliances are appliances worn to influence jaw growth in patients with skeletal disharmonies. These appliances can only be used in growing children, and act on the bones of the face to modify the size or position of the jaws. One example of an orthopedic appliance which many people are familiar with is a palate expander. These appliances are extremely useful, and can correct problems in growing patients which otherwise would require jaw surgery to correct in adults. Dr. Jaffe uses information obtained from X-rays and clinical examinations to determine if patients require an orthopedic appliance.
