Now that it’s cooler outside and the leaves are changing color, it’s time for your Barrington orthodontist and his team to share a few fall recipes here that are perfect to eat when wearing braces. All these recipes, which are quick and easy to make are given the stamp of approval by Dr. Jaffe as being safe to eat when your teeth are covered in brackets and wires.
1 pound ground beef
1/3 cup ketchup
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
8 ounces frozen mixed vegetables
1 16-ounce package instant mashed potatoes, cooked.
¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Brown the beef in a large frying pan and drain off fat. Stir in the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce then add the vegetables. Stir the mixture and cook for about 1 minute. Place the mixture in a baking dish. In a separate bowl, mix the cheese with the potatoes then spread it over the beef mixture and bake for about 15 minutes or until heated through.
1 24-ounce jar tomato-based pasta sauce
1 can (14 ½ oz) diced tomatoes
½ cup water
2 packages (1 lb. Each) frozen cheese ravioli
1 package shredded cheese (Italian flavored)
2 Tbsp. Grated Parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Mix the pasta sauce, tomato, and water then spoon one cup of it into a 13×9 baking dish. Layer half the ravioli and 1 cup of the shredded cheese over the sauce. Top with remaining ravioli and sauce. Sprinkle with the remaining shredded cheese, then cover with foil. Bake for 45 minutes then uncover and bake for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and let stand 10 minutes before serving.
2 Tbsp butter
¾ cup finely chopped onion
2 cups peeled and diced potatoes
1 ½ cups water
½ tsp dried dill weed
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp ground black pepper
1 ¾ cup milk
3 Tbsp of cooked bacon bits
1 Tbsp dried parsley
In a saucepan over medium heat, saute the onion in the butter until lightly browned. Add the potatoes, water, dill, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer until the potatoes are tender and water is nearly all evaporated, for at least 30 minutes. Then stir in the milk and bacon bits and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, stir in parsley and serve.
2 Tbsp butter, melted
2 ½ Tbsp sugar
2 Tbsp milk
½ tsp vanilla extract
½ tsp baking powder
¼ cup flour
Blueberries – about 8
In a bowl, whisk the butter, sugar, milk and vanilla extract together. Then add the baking powder and flour and whisk again. Mix in the blueberries and pour into two microwave-safe cups or one mug. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Remove from microwave, allow to cool slightly then sprinkle a little sugar over the top and enjoy!
