Invisalign in Portsmouth RI

At Jaffe Orthodontics, we take pride in providing excellent service and care for all of our patients across the board. One of our popular treatments includes braces, available for all ages. While traditional braces are still as popular as ever, many patients choose to go an alternative route by using Invisalign for their treatment.

Q. Do aligners need to be worn full time?

Invisalign® aligners should be worn a minimum of 18-24 hours per day for the best treatment outcome possible. They should only be removed for eating, drinking, and cleaning.

Q. Are there certain “lifestyle” restrictions with Invisalign?

For the most part, no! That is one of the largest advantages of choosing Invisalign. Since your aligners are removed for eating and cleaning purposes, you’re still able to enjoy the same foods as always! You can also brush and floss as you normally would. Minor changes will be necessary, such as drinking only water while wearing your aligners and avoiding chewing gum and smoking. Compared to the limitations of traditional braces, though, the flexibility of Invisalign is unmatched.

Q. I was told a few years ago that I was not a candidate for Invisalign®. What has changed?

Technology is always advancing, both in technique and improved materials. This allows us to treat more complicated cases. Therefore, if you have been told in the past that you are not an Invisalign® candidate, consider scheduling a consultation with Dr. Jaffe to find out if Invisalign® is now right for you! As your Barrington, Portsmouth, and Bristol Invisalign orthodontist, Dr. Jaffe is capable of treating even some of the most involved Invisalign® cases.

Q. What are “attachments”?

Attachments are tooth-colored “build-ups” applied to your teeth which provide a “handle” for the aligners to grab on to. Because of these attachments, Invisalign® is not completely invisible, but they are still much less noticeable than conventional braces.

Q. What is inter-proximal reduction (IPR)?

While it might sound intimidating, Inter-proximal reduction, or IPR, is simply the process of reshaping teeth to create space for movement. IPR is a common technique used by orthodontists to make the space needed for teeth when using Invisalign®. A tiny amount of enamel is removed from the teeth (a fraction of a millimeter), but the process is safe, with no increase in cavity susceptibility or decreased tooth longevity.

Q. If my bite is off, does that mean that I can’t get Invisalign®?

Long story short, nope! As we’ve mentioned, technology improves over time, meaning these days Invisalign® can now treat a much wider range of problems. This includes certain bite problems. The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign® is to visit Dr. Jaffe.

Q. What is a “refinement”?

Sometimes, teeth aren’t moving the way we want them to. When this happens, a refinement might be needed. Refinements are additional aligner trays that are adjusted to your needs to ensure the most effective treatment. Refinements typically extend your treatment period a bit but will ensure your smile is exactly what you want at the end.

Inter-proximal reduction or IPR is the process of re-shaping teeth to create space for movement. It is one of the common techniques used by orthodontists to create space for teeth when using Invisalign®. While we do remove a very small amount of enamel from the teeth (think fraction of a millimeter), this process does not increase the susceptibility of the teeth to cavities, or affect the longevity of the teeth in any way.

As previously stated, with improvements in materials and techniques, Invisalign® can now treat a much wider range of problems. There are definitely certain bite problems that can be corrected with Invisalign®.
