Adult Orthodontics

Many adults think that they’re too old for braces. But they’re not! Braces can work for everyone at all ages, depending on a person’s bite, teeth, and oral health standing. At Jaffe Orthodontics, our adult orthodontic treatment plan aims to fix these problems, all while giving patients an incredible-looking smile. If you’re an adult who is looking to start orthodontic treatment, learn how braces can help improve your oral and physical health.

Why Get Adult Braces?

If you’re an adult who is unhappy about the way your teeth look and function, now is the best time to get braces! Braces or clear aligners can help improve the way how your oral health looks and feels. No matter how old you are, you’re never too old to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile! Braces can help with certain problems, such as:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Malocclusions (such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites)
  • Incorrect jaw positioning
  • Speech impairment
  • TMJ/TMD relief
  • Helping to prevent dental diseases
  • Increase self-confidence

Crowded teeth can make it harder to properly clean the mouth, thus increasing the risk of developing dental problems. When you can’t reach certain areas, foods and plaque cannot be removed, giving bacteria the perfect environment to grow, causing cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay to form.

What to Expect During Treatment

In the beginning, adults can experience soreness during orthodontic treatment. Typically, your teeth will be the most uncomfortable 12 to 24 hours after an adjustment, but the soreness tends to disappear within a week. Taking a painkiller can help with the soreness. You may also find it difficult to chew more solid foods during that time, so stick to soft foods and liquids.

Today, modern orthodontic appliances (such as Invisalign) can be more comfortable to wear because they place less pressure on the teeth, all while gradually shifting teeth to a straighter form. Modern treatments also require fewer visits to the orthodontist because they don’t require in-office tightening or adjustments. Instead, you will be given a set of trays that will require you to change a set every 10-14 days.

And once treatment is done, many patients will be required to wear retainers to keep the teeth straight and prevent shifting.
